i bought my car from a smoker and i can not stand when my car smells like smoke so my first thing to do is to replace the cabin air filter, but i can not seem to find anything on it anywhere about what type and where it is located

In the Grand Am the filter is behind the glove box. It may be the same in the Grand Prix. Open your box, you should be able to remove it by gently pushing the sides in up by the dash. The filter should be foam type in a plastic frame.

Changing the filter is good, but you will need to air the car out for a while. You may be able to eliminate some of the odor by spraying a generous amount of Lysol or other disinfectant/deodorant into the duct intake just inside the air cabin filter. I would do this with the fan running on high to distribute it throughout the duct system.

Febreeze works good too and if you put a couple dryer sheets in with the filter and like Kevlar said let the air distribute for a few days you will notice a difference. Don't leave them in there forever though. Lol. I don't think anything bad would happen but probably best to take em out once they've done their job
