I have a 2000 Pontiac Firebird in great condition. The only problem I seem to be experiencing is a loud humming noise when I take the car over 50mph, especially when I let off the accelerator. If my foot is lightly hitting the gas, the humming stops. Is this just a problem with old sports cars? That seems to be the concensus I get when I ask around. It's driving me insane to listen to that loud noise all the time!

there is something wrong and you should have it checked. The car can be placed on a lift with someone operating the vehicle and someone else below observing the source of the sound.

I got it looked at...the rear differetial is the problem. $1,500+labor to fix. Not worth it to me. The car is slowly falling apart. Looks like I'm gonna be selling soon.

I just had to repair my son's 2002. Found a used rear at a junkyard for $300.00 paid a mechanic/buddy $200.00 to replace it. He says it sounds like a new car! Even if your going to sell it, might be worth it. I did have a shop tell me it'd cost a grand, before i went that route. Good luck!

Is it a manual or an automatic? My manual howls in 3rd and 5th, and I was told the sincros are worn in it. When I first got the car I thought it was the rear end.

Welp, went ahead and decided to get it fixed. Took it two places..one place said 2,000$+Labor...second place said 1,250$ total using a refurbished axle and threw in fixing the airpumps in the trunk for free....you tell me haha I really hope it sounds like a new car.

It is an automatic.

Couldn't bring myself to sell the dang thing.

1,250 is cheaper than a new car.
