1967 Bonneville Carb Options, HELP

Hello,
I'm a new member to this forum, as I've recently became an owner of a 1967 Bonneville. I'm more familiar with earlier models, 62-64, so the 67 is new territory. I'm very excited to start building knowledge about this vehicle, and start tinkering.

The 67 I recently purchased is a surprisingly clean car, but as in most cases there have been a few mod's through its life, which I would like to reverse. It's got an edelbrock intake, a holley carb, and crummy chrome valve covers and air cleaner. I'd like to pull the engine, clean it up, and bring it back to stock up top if possible.

My questions are in regards to the intake, carb, and air cleaner option that would have been stock on this car. I understand Pontiac went though a transition from 389 to 400, along with a variety of carbs as this transition occurred between early 67 and late 67. I'd like to understand the stock type and numbers that would have been on my car, any ideas? The build sheet indicates the car built with L78 400 4bbl, XX engine code, 4505 air cleaner code, and PA carb code, TH400, A/C, california car. Anyone know if the carb should be Carter or a Rochester? It is my understanding that SOME early 67 fullsize may have been equipped with Carters? Need correct intake and numbers if possible.

Much thanks to anyone who can help me identify the correct equipment (and numbers too look for) so that I can begin hunting these items down, and put the car back to the way it was.

Did you order the vehicle information packet from www.phs-online.com which would tell you in more detail what the car came with and when it was manufactured . I thought the Quadrajet was the only carb for 67 but this link also shows the Carter based on what size engine and horsepower. http://www.pontiacpower.net/numbers/...anifold-codes/
The factory issue of the Service Manual for 1967 section 6B has carburetor numbers.
Why do you list the engine code as XX, you dont see the code?

i did some more research and the engine code should tell you the type of carburetor, the 70272xx are Quadrajets and the 4242S is a Carter

melsg5, This is awesome info. Much thanks! Exactly the starting point I was looking for.
I'll also take your advice on ordering PHS docs to confirm, but it looks as if this helps point me in the right direction based off the XX engine code. I'll turn next to the block casting #'s to see if it also matches up.

I see it is XX so the correct carburetor is the Carter 4242s and the intake is 9782896

Awesome. A huge help having those intake and carter carb part numbers.

Looking at the oringal air cleaner in the trunk of the car, its part# is 6424505, mirroring the build sheet code "4505". I see the housings carb opening is smaller than that of a 4bbl-Rochester, and bigger than that of a 2bbl setup.

All this is aligning & supporting its factory setup as a carter 4bbl.

I have a mechanical choke version of the correct carb that came a set of heads and factory square bore intake(can't remember number off hand) that I picked up about 8yrs ago to switch my 67 Executive from a 2jet to a holley. I rebuilt the Carter and ran it for a couple yrs, then ended up running a very early torquer intake and a 650 holley. This setup yields plenty of low end and on a 4hr road trip yielded 26mpg
