2004 trans flush

Ok, I'm wanting to do a trans flush and filter change and want to know the best way to get the most old fluid out. Can I start the engine with the trans pan off to pump out some fluid without hurting the engine? I have seen some YouTube clips where they disconnect the trans cooler line and pump it out while topping up through the dip stick. I don't want to try and get all the old fluid out, just more than just dropping the pan.

after dropping the pan you can crank the engine over, or start it only for a few seconds. You wont hurt the engine, what you dont want to do is damage the transmission.
