Squealing tensioner

I have a 94 grand am and I believe the tensioner is squealing. I changed the alternator a few ago, so it's not that. My concern is when I turn the AC on the noise goes away. And when the heat is on or off the noise comes back. Could it be something else other then the tensioner? The sound seems to come from that area. If it is the tensioner do I have to jack the engine up to get it out? I tried taking it off when the alternator was out but the frame is to close for the bolt to come out completely. Thanks for the help

use a piece of rubber hose as a stethoscope to determine where the noise is coming from.
which engine is in the car?

It is probably the belt, but definatly check as described don't just throw parts at it. How old is the belt? How many miles?

And just because you changed the Alternator "a few ago?" does not rule it out. If you just installed an inexpensive "rebuilt" unit from one of the national parts stores they are not really "rebuilt" they really only clean. paint, and fix what is broken at the time. A rebuilt unit used to mean all the bushings were replaced, but not anymore.

Air conditioner Compressor Bearing is out if it goes away when the clutch is engaged. They make an A/C delete pulley I think.
