How can you increase horsepower?

I've read that the Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe lack accelerating power and have found this to be the case with my 2003 Pontiac Vibe (1.8L engine). I don't know if my bad catalytic converter, which I don't plan on spending $800to fix, is part of the issue, but is there anything that can be done to up my power? I'm not too engine-smart, so please use small words (and small price tags, if at all possible). Thanks!

what do you mean by "bad", is it clogged or not functioning? If clogged it will kill your power and eventually damage the engine. If you dont want to replace it find someone who will insert a "test" pipe to replace it.
Other than that, if you dont know when it was last tuned, plugs, fuel filter, air filter, have it done.
There are no performance parts for that engine.

My 07 has plenty of power for a small engine.. Passing power is plenty as long as it downshifts..

Sounds like your cat is plugged... Check your intake air filter also.. Might be that simple..

Lack of power description means different things to different people / under different driving conditions. If wondering, my daily "run about" vehicle is a 2010 Vibe 1.8L with Auto transmission. With my older age driving habits and light weight foot, this vehicle has lots of power under its hood. But with lots of stuff in its trunk and 3 other heavy weight adults in the vehicle, its little engine does "lug". Especially when entering a fast hiway and one needs that extra power to get up to faster speed with others. Sometimes, I wish its factory engine was a 2.0 - for that extra "boost" (when one needs it). But for a little size vehicle mostly used for 1 adult and 1 light weight kid mostly doing under 55 mph on level roads, the little 1.8L has acceptable power. Especially for city driving conditions.

If one needs more power and certified auto mechanics inspects/confirms nothing is wrong with your Vibe 1.8L, then perhaps its time to get a different vehicle???? Something different that has more factory "zoom / zoom" power under its hood (when one needs it).

Hope this helps - somehow....
