New Guy

Howdy Howdy,

I have two Catalinas, 61 and a 65. Trying to get the 65 up and running first. Is there a good resource for wiring diagrams here? Also, what spark plugs are preferred and are there different ones for different years? My 65 has a newer 350 Pontiac engine. Not sure of the year yet. I'm trying to find the numbers on the block to tell me what year the engine is. Is there a printable version of a 65 shop manual somewhere I can download?

Thanks for letting me join,
Ken

The shop manual is available on CD or print from www.amesperf.com and has wiring diagrams.
You have to know what heads are on the block to determine which plug to use. You could have a 75 block and a 70 head or any of a number of combinations.
Here is a site to help ID the heads

Welcome,

the 350 in your 65 has to be a 68-77 as those are the only years they made a 350 Pontiac. Try and find out what year the engine is. Usually there is a 2 number casting date located on the block near the distributor hole, along with the longer casting number located in other locations. Here is a link to a picture showing what I am talking about it will give you a place to start

The front of the block says Y9 and the rear of the block there is a large number 77 and a small 4 digit code that ends with a 7 so I believe it's a 1977 350ci engine. The heads I have to try and take a closer look but it looks like the 4 digit code just under the valve cover is H077. I'll get a better look tonight.

a head code for a 77 350 would be something like 6x and the plug would be a R45TS.

Thanks for the help. The head ID code is 4 and the four digit code is F077. So I'm guessing that means it was cast on June 7, 1977 and its a 6X 350ci engine. The four digit block code near the distributor is E257. May 25, 1977?

By the Y9 engine code, it looks like you have a 1977 4bbl 350, 170 HP with 6X heads with the small combustion chambers, not a bad engine to start with.
As previously stated R45TS plugs would be correct. Post some pictures of the car & engine for us (we Like Pictures)
