2000 grand prix tail pipe smoke

I went to have 2000 grand prix (3.8 ltr) smog test at test only station (Calif)
The car passed all tests except the snap test where the technician quickly snaps the gas pedal to the floor and releases it while a 2nd technician watches tailpipe for any trace of exhaust. I was told black smoke was visible.
There are no Service Engine lites on and no codes present.
If engine was out of emission range, how come engine lite or codes not present.
I am original owner and car has 180K miles.
Dealer recall several years ago changed intake manifold gasket. Any suggestions for getting my car to pass this visual test, thanks.

1. Move out of California
2. Check the emissions regulations for California, I had trouble finding any reference to a snap test for other than diesel or heavy duty vehicles.
3. There was a suggestion of running a slightly heaver viscosity oil and adding a bottle of STP. So if you normally run a 10w30 oil run 10w40 with STP added.

Thank you for the recommendations. I will contact the State (smog) referee to question the application of the snap test to my vehicle and I will chg the oil to 10/40 and add the STP additive before I go for my retest. Moving is not an option for awhile.

2000 Grand Prix tail pipe smoke

This info is for melsg5 and all others who might be interested. I contacted the smog administrator and he said the snap test is to determine if the vehicle is emitting particulate matter into the air but is still within limits when measuring the 3 exhaust gases (CO, HC and NOx). Any car will fail if visible smoke is observed. The test also indicates if the engine might be burning oil or has leaking fuel injectors. I did as you suggested and added the STP engine additive and since its summertime I used 10/40 oil rather than the factory recommended 10/30.
This vehicle is a 3rd car so it rarely goes on the freeway. I took it for a 20 mile trip at legal freeway speeds, then took the car for a re-test at smog shop and it passed. Since this car passed all other aspects of the smog test, only the snap test was checked. Tks for the recommendations.
