My recently purchased 73 Ventura has sprung a leak.It is in a strange location. It is water coming from a small square passage in between the intake and cylinder head about half way back on the top of the head. Both sides of head have this rectangle opening in the middle top of the head just below the valve cover.I dried it out and can put a small long screwdriver quite a ways down the hole. The hole itself looks like a factory{1/2 inch ?} hole. Was there a freeze plug there>The other side does not leak...yet.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

73 head problem

I stated a water leak but it is an exhaust leak. You can see vapor coming up through it as soon as you start the car and can hear the clacking of the exhaust leak.It is the factory 2 barrel with 4c heads.I read that article.Does it sound like that's the problem? Thanks

you have a bad intake manifold gasket, the exhaust leak is from the crossover passage. Make sure you get the correct gasket for a 73 and make sure you have the correct intake for a 73.

Either the Heads or the intake has been changed, starting in 1973 the intake heat riser is taller on the 73-79 model years, and more than likely the intake was changed to a model designed for the 65-72 model year engines.

Here is a link to a set of gaskets that come with various heat riser block off plates
