Driveshaft obstructed in transmission

What am I looking at inside tranny (see pic)… I was replacing my driveshaft, but was given the wrong one by Autozone… when I attempted to put the old one back in it wouldn't go all the way in. Upon inspection I could see that square metal bar blocking the opening. I assume it's part of the differential, but I can't find a diagram with anything that looks remotely like that. Would appreciate any info. Thanks

Can you grab it with pliers and pull it out?
Is it just sitting on the splines of the internal gear or is it further in?
You can also post your question on a Toyota Matrix site in case someone there recognizes it.
Why are you trying to change the axle, was it making noise or was the problem really internal to the transmission evidenced by the piece in your picture?

I am embarrassed to say that I screwed up, axle was not all the way in... I have done this a dozen times without issues and could have sworn the drive shaft was all the way in. I guess the pic I took was deceiving

Still confused that the opinion gear pin has a flat side, but the car is going so I'm just gonna be grateful and not question it.

Thanks again for your input!
