I did a little more research and found out they did have a difference in three series carriers, the dividing line being the 3.36. So the lowest you can go is the 3.36. The next lowest 3.23 started using a different carrier.
here you go, So if you have a 27" tire and currently have the 3.55 at 70 mph the engine turns at 3,092 rpm. Going to a 3.36 produces 2,927 rpm. Thus my original thought it is not worth the effort for such a small difference. https://www.crawlpedia.com/rpm_gear_calculator.htm
