Hello everyone,

New to this blog stuff, so bear with me.

I just got this 04 Grand Am, has 84K miles on it. runs great.

I noticed the key was a little sticky trying to start, so I get a new ignition from amazon.
I install it, work through the re-programming of the key. (10 min in the on, off for 10 sec... 3 times)
it didn't work. I'm like ok I must have done something wrong... I do the whole procedure 4 times...still not working.
defective ignition right... so I order a new one from amazon... different vendor this time just in case.
I work through the re-programming... nothing.. 3 more times through the procedure... nothing.

I unhook the battery.
come back the next day hook the battery back up, put the key in boom fires... but won't stay running.
starts, and runs but I'm having to hold the key between the on and start.
So I start the procedure over again... 2 more times this go round. Nothing.

I do notice... the security light is not on this whole time. (it does come on for a second then turns off... the bulb test)

I'm about to replace the whole ignition unit. but the car was running perfectly before... all I wanted was to replace the ignition before my daughter started driving it. But...

Let me know if you have any ideas
any help would greatly be appreciated.

What happens if you lubricate the original and reinstall it?

Do you have a check engine light on?
Can you do a fuel pressure test?
Do you have a scan tool?

Check engine light (prior to install of new ignition) is on but disappears when I was able to start the car.

the check engine light turns off when I'm doing the install procedure.
fuel is good.
I don't have any visible codes. ( I can get a scan tool if needed)

my head keeps going to the security system. In all the install videos I've watched and read about, they keep saying that the security light stays on during the "Procedure",
but mine only does the bulb test and goes out. I was trying to find out if there was a way to reset the security system, only thing I can find to do so is to remove the battery power for a period of time.
... also it has an aftermarket radio in the car, I'm beginning to wonder if that is the culprit.

The security system disables the fuel pump. If you have fuel pressure and also no security light there is no security problem.

Can I attach a video to this thread? I'll take a video and show what is happening.
