Normal to have pieces of metal debris in tranny?

So I had an issue with my 2007 G5's speedo going haywire, and my mechanic thought maybe a speed sensor. He pulls the speed sensor and the end of it is chewed to crap (evidently by chunks of metal) and there are two decent size bits of metal stuck to it (because as he explained to me, it is a magnet). He said it looked like it might be pieces of a spacer, and since I still have powertrain warranty left, I brought it right into the dealership. The service guy used the terms "possibly pieces of a shim".

They couldn't "recreate" the problem (it's intermittent due to the fact that it likely only messes up when some metal gets attached to the sensor and causes interference). And they are keeping it tomorrow to "try again" but the service guy told me that it's "normal" to have some metal debris in there. These pieces are minimally 1cm by 1cm and actually look like they may have come off of something resembling a "disc".

To me it seems illogical to call this "normal" and I just feel like maybe they don't want to fix it. Can anyone comment on them calling this "normal"?

It is not normal to have metal pieces that size in a trani. A mid to high mileage vehicle will have a sludge like metalic material in the pan but not large pieces.

Yeah it's def not normal by any means, I think the dealership might want to just hold off on fixing until a major repair is necessary. Even warranty replacements make them money. But hey if its covered under warranty and you can still drive it without any major probs if it were me I would just let them go with that and when ur tranny goes ask if that is also normal. :) Either way good luck with everything and hope you get it fixed.
