I have a 96 firebird and I put in a new tps and now it won't start when it was with the old tps. I thought maybe the new tps was bad so I put the old one back in and it won't start now either. What did I do. I put in a new tps cause the old one was testing bad not near 5 volts please help

start looking for something you intentionally or accidentally disconnected. Are the plugs still getting a spark?

tps delima

I checked for spark and It's getting healthy spark. I checked the tps with the multimeter again and the gray wire is testing out at 4.99 volts and the blue is testing out at 27.3 on the meter and my obd is coding and saying tps circuit "A" is low. What is confusing me is with the bad tps it at least ran. Why would putting a new tps on make it not run especially when I put the the old one back on and it won't start when it was starting before I took the old one off. Please tell me what I did. Oh ya I checked the car for loose or not hooked up connections. Thanks so much

27.3 what?

tps test

I made a mistake when I wrote the reading for the blue wire wrong It's reading .6 volts and the grey wire is reading 4.99 volts sorry for the confusion

Ok, those numbers look normal. If you have spark, do you have fuel? you need to check the fuel pressure.

tps

At this point there's no fuel at the fuel rail and I can't get it to start so the only fuel pressure I can test is ignition stage which is 0 psi. It's frustrating cause I had this problem with it before it would start up and run fine but after the car ran for awhile mainly when you would be on your way somewhere it would stall and wouldn't start until it sat awhile. When it was running not to long ago the fuel pressure was 30 psi is it the fuel pump

do you hear the pump engage when you turn the key to start? If not start checking for a bad relay or pump.

tps/fuel pump or relay

How do I test either one of those. I really appreciate everyones help you all rock

use a jumper wire at the relay. that will put power right to the pump. have a friend at the tank underneith and listen for the pump to come on. if nothing your going to have to drop the tank and pull the pump. verify power at the pump harness connector before dropping the tank. also verify power at the relay as well...good luck...

fuel pressure

My psi is about 35 psi would that be fuel pump or fuel regulator. Again I can not thank everyone enough for their input.

fuel pressure

My fuel pressure is 35psi would it be a bad fuel pump or fuel regulator. That reading was when it was running but now it won't start and has no psi on a ignition reading. Any help is appreciated.

replace both, the worst thing that could happen it wont start...
you can just replace one at a time just to see which one was the problem child but i would suggest both...since you are taking the system apart anyway... most likly going to need one or the other down the road anyways...

relay

Could you please help me remember how to jump the relay. Thanks I greatly appreciate all your help and jumping the relay will be useful knowledge

find the relay switch... and there should be three four wires(not sure with your car but one of the wires is a hot wire(meaning it has power) one should be a ground(mean no power) and one should go to the pump(no power). the ground should be black or have black stripes. do not put power to that wire, or you will have to replace the fuel pump fuse.

take a peice or wire and put it in the slot with power and put the other end in the power supply line to the pump. this bypasses the automatic funtions and start the pump. remember while you are doing this the pump will not stop until the jumper wire is removed. the ignition does have to be on and you have to have power at the inlet side of the switch. if no power is at the relay check your fuses. have some one listen for the pump near the tank.

if the pump doesn't come on find the wire going to it under the car and see if power is making back there. if not run a wire from the batter to the wiring leads to the pump and check that way. remember if you unplug the pump, it has to be grounded in order to come on.

if the pump comes on when you jump the relay then change your relay. once the pump is up and running check you pressure quickly and stop the pump(while you use the the jumper wire may cause the pump to get hot)

i am not a professional but i have done enough trouble shooting on my cars to get an understanding of GM general set ups.
