Hello - I have a 2003 Grand Am V6 that recently started making a noise when the engine was running cold, and goes away after it warms up some. I hear the noise coming from the vicinity of the serpentine belt but don't know whether it may be the upper idler pulley or the belt tensioner. I tried rocking all the pulleys from side to side to see if they had any play in them, and I did notice the upper idler pulley does have play in it (much more so than the other pulleys), so I'm wondering if that would be the first place to start with fixing the issue. I've also heard that when its a case of the noise going away after the engine warms up then its likely to be the belt tensioner that is bad. Can anyone help steer me in the right direction here? I'm going to try the water spray bottle test to see if the noise stops or continues after spraying it. Also does the upper engine mount definitely have to be removed in order to change out one or both parts? Appreciate any feedback...
