I have a 1986 Trans Am with automatic transmission. Recently the transmission does not want to shift gears until the engine is at a higher rpm than normal. I was told the modulator valve may be the problem but I was also told this vehicle does not have this valve. Is there a modulator valve on the 86 trans am? If so,where is it located? Also, any other advice would be appreciated as to possible solutions. I have changed the transmission fluid and filter but that didn't seem to have any effect. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The problem could be related to the shift cable but your best bet is to take it to a transmission shop.

if that is a carborated t/a then most likely it is your detend cable. it will stretch over time and lossen up. you trans is shifting using centrifigal force. there is no vacume module on the 200-700r4's they are either electronic lock up or not. if you are carbed then all you have to do is push on the back of bracket where the cable come through, there is a button there. push it in as hard as you can and push the throttle all the way open. release the button. you can do miner adjustment as you go.
