Car doesnt go into gears

Bummer, couldn't get a clutch local? Stephan in Canada just got one with no problem from RA....
Glad you got the seal in, a bunch of those tools on EBay.

I usually use the old seal to tap in a new seal, maybe wouldn't work on our engines, can't find anything on the web about it though....

Wow, I got a replacement from Rock Auto and do you believe it, they sent me the SAME wrong part. I will never buy another part from that site. Bad reviews. Never knew it. So many unhappy customers. I now have wasted over a week. Ordered the clutch kit from AZ.

Thats a great idea, Doug. never thought of that. But next time, maybe in 2050 I will try that. LOL

Bell housing wont go on nicely, doesnt mate up to the engine surface. Wow. Its crooked, touches the top but shifts pout at bottom. I aligned the clutch nicely, with he alignment tool.

Bell housing now wont mate up to the engine evenly. Goes on crooked. Have to remove again, and try. What a job. I did check beforehand to make sure the splines on the new clutch match those of the input shaft. Why wont it go in?

Twist the trans side by side in while in gear, and it should go in....take a break, don't get frustrated.🥵👌😑

Does that mean you used a clutch disc alignment tool while tightening the cover to the flywheel?

Yes, Mel, I did as per instructions. But update: all went well in the end! Have been driving it for a week now. BUT, one problem: the tachometer for some strange reason is wacked out. It reads about 2000 rpm too high. Why? RPM is monitored by the coil, right? I did not mess with the coil at all. Advice appreciated.

Loose or broken wire on the coil will cause the tach to read high, check the connector to the coil and it's wires......a bad ground ( broken or loose) also...

OK, but curious- if there is a bad wire on the coil wont it interfere with engine running quality? Meaning, my engine runs well, does that mean the coil MUST be all in good order? Also, where is this rpm filter as they call it located? Could that have any thing to do with this ?

I will check the coil with the diagnostics procedures. But where is this tachometer filter? The shop manual does not show it anywhere where I could find it.

Coil tests out all OK, with ohmmeter. has to be the rpm filter. I located it, right next to then radiator switch near firewall. Thing is, I cant find one for my car's year. Maybe they have universal ones I can splice in the 2 wires(?).

So Doug, you think that corvette part will fir my 87 sunbird? Many GM parts are interchangeable, right?

How about eliminating it?
My understanding is it is to prevent radio interference.

Not sure, Camaro's and Corvette's use them .
Don't understand why your tach went wacko by just changing a clutch? You sure you didn't chaf a wire or break one?

Try wiggling your engine harness before buying that filter.....
