I have 01 grand am GT with 110400 miles. I Plan on having my struts replaced in the front soon along with the plugs and wires. Also im going to have then tranny fluid and filter changed and the tires rotated and balanced

I know I could do most of this myself but im really not a fan of working on vehicles unless I absolutely have too. I guess my question is what else should I be look at to have replaced with the vehicle having this many miles?

NOW TO THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEM!

Today I went to start my car and the first thing I noticed after starting it was the security light on the dashboard was on and I have never seen it on before so I thought that was kind of weird. Well I had to run the store tonight and I noticed when I got my car started my dome and mirror lights didnt dim out right away. They actually didnt go off until I put the car in gear and started driving away. This same thing happend once I left the store. When I got home I couldnt get the dome and mirror lights to shut off at all and once I put my car in park it started idling very rough. the gauge kept jumping between .5 and 1 on the rpms. Also when I went to lock the doors with the remote my horn didnt sound off like it normally does.

It has been raining out here for about the last day and a half so Im starting to wonder if I have a bad ground some where or if anyone else experienced anything like this with their vehicle?

thanks for your time.

is the check engine light on? is there excessive water in the engine compartment caused by worn rubber seals around the hood?

The check engine light is not on and no excessive water under the hood. Seals are in good shape around the hood. the car was really took care of well. I bought it from a relative. I also noticed today when I was driving back home the dome lights would come on again when stopped all the way at a stop sign and would shut back off until I was about up to 5 miles an hour and moving again.

Also When the dome lights are staying on the horn will not honk when im locking the doors with the remote keyless entry.

have the BCM, body control module checked, and also the main power junction under the hood, and something easy, check your ground cable on the battery and where it connects to the chasis.

I ended up talking to one of my friends and told him whats going on. He seems to think it is the security controll module. I wish I would of talked to him first but I totally forgot about him being a mechanic. Hopefully this is the problem.

I also noticed now the automatic locks were not working putting the car in and out of gear.

Ended up being the BCM. Im wondering since my car has this many miles on it now should I be expecting more electrical problems to occur?

Nobody can predict that, too many electronic components which will either last forever or fail tomorrow. Not like a mechanical component which has a certain life time and then should be replaced.

Well I brought my car in to have the BCM replaced. The guy ended up moving the bcm from the location in was in, close to the a/c unit, and cleaned up the electrical connections. Worked fine when I left but started acting up again.

So im out about $200.00 bucks now. Called my mechanic and told him the car is still having the same problems and he said "oh yeah its def the bcm" Well i asked him to replace it in the first place and he just moved it and cleaned up the connections.

The person I found will put in a used one he said and I ok'd that. But Im still waiting on the call back from him to install it. It has been a week now and im getting sick of waiting because eventually this could lead to problems with my car not starting and the first sign of the bcm was going out the security light did come on.

He told me it would take about 15mns to install. So im wondering now if I can just do this myself or does each bcm have to be programmed to a certain vehicle? I know a few gm cars use the same bcm. If i dont have to program it I think Im just going to do it myself.
