Started this morning started when son left school. Went to start just now and nothing. Turn key no clicking, just nothing but dash all coming on and can hear like the relay for fuel.

Lights appear bright, headlights, turn, dome, dash etc.

Tried putting in N instead of P just to see. Nothing.

Would the starter and solenoid act like this? No clicking or warning, just out.

Just looking for ideas.

Do you have a voltmeter, if so can you check battery voltage when you turn the key? It could be the starter or a relay but have to know condition of battery first.

Thats what I will be checking next. Weather is pretty chitty right now though.

I'll get back when I do.

Today went out to push it in the barn. Thought why not try and start. It did. Pulled in barn to test.

Battery shows right and alternator charging shows right when checked.

Took about 4 tries but it finally didnt start again once in barn. Lights do not dim and volt reading doesn't drop from trying to start. Right now it is not starting again.

If not starter/solenoid. Where to now?

Possible ignition switch

I was messing with a relay under the hood on drivers side panel, also messing with neutral safety switch on the trans.

I'm not thinking they are the problem  not sure though, because.

IF I turn the key to start back and forth fast sometimes on the 5th try it will start.

So you think it might be the ignition switch with that extra info? Just this part Ignition Lock Cylinder?

What about Ignition Control Module (ICM)

Ignition switch not the cylinder and not the ignition module. They are a mechanical device with contacts. If the contacts wear, get dirty, etc. you can have intermittent problems. Do a google search pretty sure you will come up with this as a common issue.

Yes that is correct

Any info or links on how to replace Ignition Switch step by step or hints?

Never been inside a steering column newer then 93.

OK I am to the point of replacing and ran into a stumbling block. The 02 bottom panel bolts cant be flipped over to use to remove the very tiny 6 star shaped 2 bolts holding the ign switch on.

What size is these special little 6 sided star type bolt heads and tool needed? It would be a female tool to remove. Nothing I have comes close.

My repair manual, as well as the repair manual on the AutoZone website calls it a tapping screw but doesn't say anything about the size.

Maybe bring a pic of it into Lowes and have someone help you. Or, use a small adjustable wrench.

Got it took 4 different places. E4 star socket.

Replaced the ignition switch, still nothing.

Replaced the starter relay, nothing.

Looked at headlights while trying to start, no change.

Put tester on battery again and watched it while key was turning to try and start. It did drop volts this time. 12.?? down to 11.7? when turning key to start.

I didnt think starter before because of lights not dimming and volt not dropping before.

What do you think now? solenoid and starter?

I'm gonna be replacing the switch on my car soon too, I bought a pack of pliers from harbor freight and they work but is kind of a pain taking it off with those. Guess I should've waited for your post.

Could it be maybe the ignition lock cylinder or the passlock sensor?

I just tried something. Even though security theft light has never been on (as in staying on) or stayed on before or anything. I started thinking maybe it needs to be reset with new ignition switch.

So I tried this. Turn to run and all light come on and when the security theft light went off I allowed another 30 seconds or so. Then went right back to off and then right to start. It started and has every time since.

Does this make since to anyone or did I just get lucky or what?

Advanced had the E4 in a set for $42, HF had deep well E4 in 6 piece set $8. Everyone else was only to a 5 or 6 for smallest, NAPA, TV hardware etc.

well the sensor is part of the ignition cylinder, wonder if when changing the switch you jarred a bad connection causing it to have to relearn your key.

No clue. Worked flawless all day today, 1st try every time. Still leary though.

Worked flawless every start till just now 4/4/13 since last fix noted above.

Whatever it is reared it's ugly head again today or something else. Same symptoms as before.

So wondering neutral safety switch or what else to look at now too.
