'03 pontiac grand am service engine soon light on?

[Hoping for answers]

Had major engine work done in June, replaced the battery about 2 weeks ago. Everything was working great. Left work yesterday, started the car and service light came on and stayed on? Any ideas for quick, easy and cheap fixes?
