I have an '04 Grand Am. Not sure if it's an LE or SE. definitely not a GT. 3.4 Liter engine. I was told by a mechanic that my cruise control doesn't work because my anti-lock control unit is not communicating. Here's where my problem really starts. I cannot find an anti-lock control unit on this car to save my life!

I've read every post on this I can find across the net. It's not on the firewall, fender wall, behind the washer fluid tank behind the splash shield in the driver's side front fender. I traced the lines from the master cylinder to a splitter box under the battery tray and from there out to the wheels. The front wheels have a place for speed control sensors but there are only plugs in them. No wires.

Did this mechanic lie to me or does my car actually have anti-lock brakes?

Thanks for reading,

Ed

ABS was optional/standard depending on which model you have. Look at the attached owners manual and the references to ABS. You should have an ABS light on the dash and the fuse box should have an ABS fuse. In addition the brake lines from the master have to go to the ABS pump which is usually about a few inches or so in front of the master.

What about the fuse box and the pump?

If the ABS light doesn't come on when you turn the key, you probably don't have ABS. Look on the spare tire cover in the trunk and see if RPO codes JM4 or JM8 are listed, if not, you don't have ABS.

No pump by the master cylinder. There is a 50 amp fuse in the fuse area under the hood and it is good. No light on the dash at start up. I'll check the codes in the trunk.

The owners manual on the link above points out the Position of the ABS fuses on Page 5-90 and 5-91, did you check if they are there? With no pump and no connections at the wheels it already sounds like you do not have ABS. So it sounds like you need a new mechanic who knows how to diagnose cruise control issues.

I also have an '04 no ABS or TCS . I think more '04's came without than with it.

No JM4 or JM8 codes on the spare tire cover. Looks like I have a quack for a mechanic and tome for a new thread.
