05 Montana Air Ride Compressor isnt working

2005 Montana van. The air compressor starts when the van is turned off and not moving. Mechanic unplugged it. Said we could bypass it and use regular shocks!?! Should we? Or will cause more damage?
How do we repair it?

Regular shocks won't damage anything.
Your mechanic doesn't know how to check for a relay that may be stuck in the on position?
Did he check for a air leak in the system?
