Afternoon all..
I have a 2006 Pontiac Torrent, AWD, 3.4L, 285000Kms
My issue is, when the AWD kicks in, the rear end makes one hell of a grinding/clunking type noise. It is almost as if there is a Sprag Clutch or an over running clutch that is constantly slipping and gripping under mid to heavy acceleration/load in the snow and ice. Under normal driving conditions there is no noise.
I'm just wondering, if anyone has had a rear end apart, is there a drum clutch or set of frictions discs and plates in the diff that go bad and chatter when engaged? I picked up some Versatrak and was going to change the fluid and have a look at the oil for any types of deposits in it. Even at my cost, the Versatrak stuff is dear! (I am a Farm Equipment Mechanic)
Any insight would be great!
Thanks,
Sliver
