Has anyone else replaced their head unit in their Pontiac Torrent with the Pioneer 7 speaker system?

I just got mine replaced with an aftermarket unit, and the sound quality seems much worse than before. The system doesn't get as loud, the bass doesn't punch as hard, and the sound is muddy unless I tune out most of the bass. I had none of these problems with the stock unit which i actually thought sounded quite good.

I was curious to know if anyone else had done this, and what their results were.

Thanks!

Did you verify that the ohm rating of the Pioneer speakers matched that of the new unit?

The speakers are usually stamped with the ohm rating and you then have to check with the manufacturer of your HU.

I'll have to check that out then, as I didn't do this.

Anything to do if these don't match short of new speakers and/or a new head unit?

I think if the HU is a higher ohm rating than speakers you may be able to add a resistor to wire going to speaker to match the head unit. When you went to purchase the new head unit there was no mention of what system you currently have to insure compatilbility? Did you do this yourself or a shop, if a shop, did you check with them about your problem and mention the ohm matching of speaker and HU?

I probably went ahead with this before knowing completely what I was doing.

I ordered the equipment from Best Buy and had them install. I ordered the head unit before actually speaking to a person at the store. They didn't mention anything about this problem, but at that point, I had already ordered the head unit.

Thank you for your help so far.

Edit: I found online that the speakers are to be 180 watt. I know that my CD player only puts out 50 watts. I'm not sure if any amplication would be still in the car or if the stock head unit simply put out more watts.

That's the power rating, not the impedance. You need to google the model number of your speakers and find out what the impedance rating is for them, and check that against the impedance rating of the HU.

I am new to this forum. I am looking at replacing the head unit this weekend. i will let you know how it goes. Typically all headunits are rated at 4ohms. This should not matter, it is the rating of the amplifier that is powering the speakers, which is 2 ohms. When you connected te headunit, did you use the line level outputs of the new HU or the speaker outputs. That could be your problem.

I am also looking at replacing the speakers. I am looking at JBL 2ohm, 94dBA sensitivity (P660C) for the front and coaxials for the rear. All the research I have done recommends to replace the stock speakers with 2 ohm impedance with a high sensitivity to closely match the stock.

I pulled the amplifier out of the rear quarter panel. Reviewing the wiring, it is a 6 channel amplifer, 2 channels for the front doors AND tweeters, 2 for the back doors and 2 for the dual voice sub-woofer. I will verify once I pull the speakers from the doors.

If anyone has determined something different, please advise.

Future shop finished install of new Kenwood DDX-419 HU today. Sounds awesome. Can't wait to replace the speakers. He hooked it up the stock amp using the pre-amp outs. Interface was the PAC RP5-GM31, but he used the non-amplified port. I believe you use the amplified port of you hook the speaker out from the new HU and the PAC module has a line level converter. Not sure what happened with yours. Hover, typical GM hooking the front speakers up in parallel, but making the connection in the wiring harness, not where it is easily accessible. Will keep you posted on the speakers.

thanks for the update

Well, replaced the stock speakers with JBL P660C components up front and P662 coaxials in the rear. All I can say is wow! They are much cleaner, and can be turned up louder with no distortion. I had also replaced the headunit and it works really well. Stock speakers weigh about 1 pond each, the JBL's about 4lbs. Much better speaker. Watch your wiring though, GM changes wire colour when it goes through the door boot. (All fronts speakers Gray (+), Tan (-) and rear speakers Yellow (+) Brown (-)) I know that the rears are reverse from the GM standard. Check the polarity with a 9volt battery to verify. There are youtube videos for this.
