• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "1995 Trans Am" isn't going to indicate to anybody that you need help. However, "Need help with my 1995 Trans Am" will. Be as descriptive as you can. Please use common sense... OK, I've introduced myself now it's time to get down to the technical stuff. I need a few small item for my new ride. Things like a new (non-existent anywhere in the world)headlight switch. And advice on how the heck do you get the horn ring off so I can find out why the turn signals don't cancel. That's probably another one of those non-existent parts. Then there are the windshield wipers, they are electric and the motor runs but the wipers don't move. How is the wiper motor connected to the blade mechanism? Anyone rebuild electric clocks? I think that about covers everything I've discovered so far, But I be back as other appear. I do appreciate your help.

For a vehicle of that age it's probably best to look through Hemmings Motor News and advertise. Also try to find a factory service manual.

Manuals

I've got a set of 55 Pontiac SHOP manuals. But they are not very specific. Have a lot of information but not so much inty-gritty stuff that you really need. Now I built my first street rod in the early 50s, 32 Ford 5W with an Olds 88 engine. I've had a lot of nice rods and street cars since. So I've been around a few blocks since. Even studied Auto mechanics in college but made my living in Computers. I'm a little rusty now and as I've said, "first Pontiac" If you know what I mean. So anything you can lay on me is great.

Looks like there may not be many older folks on this Forum. I should have known when there was no Star Chief group of there own. Oh well, any info is appreciated.

Unfortunately most questions on this forum are aimed at computer equipped cars. My background is more towards the mid 60's to 70's Pontiacs. I found this site that may provide some better support for you.

For your wipers it may be that an internal gear has been stripped. Some old systems had a worm gear and wheel. I seem to remember a gear made out of pot metal or phenolic. You will probably have to open it up. You may be lucky and there is a pin or key sheared that would be easier to fix.

Hemmings is a good source for some of the other stuff. You may be able to find a vendor for steering wheels that likes to talk your ear off and may be able to tell you how to disassemble it. That's the fun part of this hobby.

There are other owners clubs that probably can help, but there may be a membership fee.

Good luck.

1950's and 1960's Star Chiefs

Last year I bought a place and a neighbor told me there were a couple old cars back in the woods. One is clearly a 1960's Star Chief and after I sent a picture of the other car to a friend he believes it is a 50's model Star Chief. They are located between Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio if you are interested.

flemdog40 - afaik, they didn't make the Star chief after 1955 or '56? (back in the day, my Mom owned a new '55 :-)

Like others have said try Hemming s for the light switch, as for your windshield wipers, it may be as simple a fix that the arm that drives the wipers that attaches to the cam arm of the motor has popped off and just needs to be snapped back on. With some of the older cars of the 50's they had (This is hard to describe as apposed to drawing) at the end of the wiper drive arm a piece of metal attaching it with two screws to this arm. It and the main drive arm had a factory stamped ball in between the two pieces.
Like cutting a mango in half and removing the large pit and then placing the two halves back together. I have experienced where these screws become loose and the drive arm falls off the wiper motor cam and then the wipers do not work but the motor runs fine.
As for the horn ring I am not up on this particular model of Pontiac but of the 50 Fords and Mercs the horn button twists off and there are screws under neath to unscrew the horn ring. Or you may have to push down on the horn ring and turn it as it locks down with tabs but be careful because once you break the tabs the ring is useless. Sorry I can not be of more help for you.
