Is there any difference in the 389 distributors from 1961 to 1962? I was also curious about how many years the same dist. will fit? From 1961 until 19?
I've been looking for a flywheel not a flex plate for the same engine, I've found some but I'm confused about the balancing (internal or external) and any differences if there are any I need to be aware of in the 389 engines. If anyone can tell me if dimensions and styles were the same for all 389's I'd be grateful. Thank you B.T.W. Am I allowed to post items for sale in this forum? I just registered and should look at the rules but a quick answer might be easier.
My Catalina is far from stock, of course it's not a Super Duty, but it would've made an awesome looking S.D., I suppose the extra weight the convertible has was counter productive to the S.D. program since it featured lighter aluminum parts but it would've been cool looking. The 389 is bored .030 over, polished Edelbrock dual quad intake, 2 Edelbrock 500 C.F.M. carbs, The cam is just a little bigger than a factory 6 pack grind but still has good vacuum. It's been lowered, lake pipes, limited slip rear end, 18" American Racing wheels I had machine shop custom fit, Alarm, D.V.D. player, power top, P.S.,P.B. and much more. It has a turbo 400 trans in it now but I'm going to put the Muncie M21 4 speed back in but this time with a hydraulic clutch setup. I've got all history dating back to 1967. The engine is number matching, the paint is Dawn Fire Mist, original color but a respray probably 20 years ago. No rust left anywhere, I replaced the trunk pan last summer to remove the last of it. This was my fathers car since 1967 bought for $115.00 with no keys. He loved this car. He had knee problems which forced him to quit driving it around late 1990's but he hadn't driven it much in the years before that. Anyway in 2007 I found out he was dying so I returned to Cal. and installed the turbo 400 automatic transmission so he could drive it if he wanted to, sadly he never did. He passed in 2008 at which time it sat in the garage without any long term preparation to preserve it. The few times I visited it made me sick to see how my mother just didn't care so upon her passing in 2018 My sister (trustee of the estate) decided it was hers and kept it. for the next year it sat again with no care given for the car my father loved so much. After an expensive legal battle I was given the chance to purchase the car that was promised to me since I was 12 years old and drove everyday as a teenager for more than twice what it was worth. The minute it was going to cost my sister a penny to have to move it or store it she decided it wasn't worth it and gave me 2 days to come from out of state and get it out of moms house since it sold. She would've gladly sold it to someone else if she could've just to burn me. My attorney agreed to a price without my consent but I would've anyway.
to make a long story short, When I got it nothing worked from sitting for so many years. In the last year and a half I've been through the car top to bottom and front to back investing more money than I'll ever get back but it's not important, all I wanted is to honor my father by putting it back on the road in better shape than it's ever been, before the covid epidemic I was able to take it to a couple local shows. I don't have a son to leave it to. I'm not concerned with how much money I'll lose selling it, Some of my best childhood memories are going to the beach in Vandenburg with my parents and I hope it out lives me and goes on to make memories for others in the future. I didn't intend on writing so much.

My sister lacks the ability to understand it's a labor of love transcending common sense sometimes, it's sacrifice and devotion of time and money that get's it done. My dad and myself share a love of old cars and this is the best way to honor my father and the car he loved so much.

Aftermarket uses same distributor 55 to 76.
So the early 60's are interchangeable.
Pontiac V8's are internally balanced 326 to 455.
