1962 pontiac catalina v8 6.4l 389cid

Hello, I have inherited a 1962 Catalina, not necessarily in working condition. Has been sitting in a garage for 20 years now and developed some problems, engine seized, along with the brakes and it requires a mechanical rebuild from transmissions, carburators, engine and so forth. The vehicle is located near Tampa, FL and I have received a quote for the rebuild cost. The estimate does not include parts, brakes and other miscellaneous things. Interior and exterior of the car is mint. It doesn't seem that the mechanic is expert in this type of car and would probably end up costing me 10,000. The estimate proposed is at 6,500. Perhaps a community familiar with this type of work can better direct me on the appropriate approach to bring the car back to life.

go to www.collectorcarmarket.com or www.nada.com and see what you come up with for the value of that car in the condition it is now and might be after the work you propose. Then decide do you really want to invest that kind of money in the car and end up with a car that may not be worth the amount you threw at it. Once you decide what you want to do, sell it as is, fix it and sell it, or fix and keep it. Look for any local Pontiac or other 60's type car clubs and speak to the members and find out where they get work done on their cars. Your estimate makes no mention of draining and refilling the differential nor does it mention draining all brake fluid and replacing. I would not trust any 60's type car to the average modern mechanic. The art of restoration is a whole different game.
