1966 Catalina heater control repair

[TOG1937]

The heater mode "off-normal-rear-defrost" does not display in the mode window. Suspect the dial cord has been pulled back into the escutcheon because instructions were not followed during possible previous service, pages 1-4 and 1-5 "switch replacement" in the 1966 Pontiac Chassis Shop Manual.

Has anyone attempted to repair this assembly?
Any suggestions or advice?
