I have a 67 Bird with a straight six, but its not the OHC, it looks like a chevy straight six. Did the base model firebirds come with a chevy straight six?
The original 6 cylinders on the 67 and 68 Firebirds were the OHC six. If this one isn't, it's probably a Chevy six like you said. Can you post a pic of it?
From what I've read recently the OHC six was only used in US Pontiacs, Canadian models used a Chevy OHV six, instead. Could your car have been sold in Canada first? BTW, 1971 Camaros came with a "Blue Flame" 6 but Firebirds only had V8s.
Ahh, it don't matter. I am buying a used 326 engine to put in the Bird. It runs but needs the gaskets redone.
what do you guys think? Should I spend my 400$ for an original Pontiac 326 that runs with all accessories, carb, intake exhaust. Or should I keep my stovebolt straight 6?
Go with the 326. Then you can alway upgrade to a 400 or 455 later if you want to.
You will have to find the correct style Pontiac motor mounts and all the brackets as nothing will fit off that six. Also the bellhousing pattern is different between the two so you will have to get a different bellhousing if it a manual transmission or an adapter plate if it's an automatic.
Darn it, nothing comes easy, The guy that is selling me the engine also has the transmission, should I just go ahead and get that as well. I wanted to install a 700r4 into it for economy but how great is the fuel efficiency of a 2 speed powerglide?
