1968 LeMans Tail Lights

Ok this should be fun. I have a 1968 Pontiac Lemans with the 400 6.6L and a 2 speed on the colum. I have had the car since December but need some help. I have one good pair of tail lights for the car. My real question is, what has to be done to the rear end to convert the tail lights to GTO because they are easier to find and get. Steps needs. I am lost and need some help. Also this is my first car.

the only difference is the lens, the GTO has almost impossible to find finned lenses and the Lemans has flat lenses. The housing are the same
 
But when i look online the housings for the GTO are tilted, as where the one's on the LeMans are not. The GTO lenses aren't angled like the Lemans and Tempest ones are. In the GTO case it is the housing that's angled.
 
you are correct. i have a hard copy of an 1983 Pontiac Parts and Illustration manual and they show a different part number for the housing on the GTO verus the LeMans but they have no picture. I could swear the 2 cars have the same rear bumper but the book did not list that far back. Can you check with the supplier of the housing if it will fit? I cannt imagine it wouldnt.

I was thinking about buying the housings and lights off of ebay. So I can't really check. But I would like to just put the GTO lenses on without taking the bumper off and changing the housings.

unless the bolts are really rusted badly removing the valence and bumper shoudnt be too bad, good luck
 
gto lights

Did you ever find out if you could swap the lights or do you have to replace the housings as well. I have been looking for taillights for my 1968 lemans as well and they are almost impossible to find. If you have to replace the housings does anyone know how much they run?
 
ames has them for $300, housing looks like without lens

I have a ames catalog but like almost everyone else they list taillight lenses and taillight housings but they say gto only. Are the gto and lemans housings and lenses interchangeable or can you do something to make them work. I have a 1968 lemans.

i am interested in your 68 lemans lenses if you have them, you will have to change the housings to convert to GTO they are a different bolt/screw pattern, thean the lemans/tempest my email is rmdelivery@gmail.com i am RAY hope to hear from you i have a restored my 68 lemans as a llemans but with a few extras lol i am in tomball texas if i hear from you i can share more ......ray
