Hello
I am replacing my current points with a Pontiac hei
Can someone tell me if the canister next to the stock distributor
Is still needed
The vacuum advanced tube goes into this and my new carb has a port for this
Thanks

if you mean by canister, the ignition coil, no you do not need it for an HEI system the coil should be built into the distributor cap.

No it's not the coil it's a 2x1 silver device in the passenger side of the car a hose from the vacuum advanced goes in one side and the other side went to the carb there is also a wire harness plugged into it

Thats for emission purposes only to supply vacuum when the transmission is in it's highest gear only, you do not need it. Did you tap into a constant 12 volt source to supply power to the HEI?

Thanks I am going to run a new 12 gauge wire to the ignition on the fuse box also the electric choke on the new carb I think I can tie into the wiper motor wire

Also there is a metal hose coming from the trans that was connected to the same vacuum source as the power brakes and that emissions device all three were connected on the back of the old carb

the metal pipe is for the vacuuum modulator on the transmission. You need to supply vacuum to that pipe at idle and all other times so it has to be connected to manifold vacuum not ported carburetor vacuum. Your choices of power are correct.

Thank you for all of your expertise
I see you answer a lot of ? On here and I do appreciate it

Hello there is no post in the fuse box labeled ign it's an empty slot
Any ideas where to hook up the hei power cable
There is a battery slot in the fuse panel

you need to find a connection that has 12 volts power while cranking and in the run position but has no power when off or in the accessory position. Use a test light or volt meter.

I looked at the wiring diagram from the service manual
And it does not look like there is any combo that has run date without acc could this be true

try the power wire going to the windshield wipers

test it with a voltmeter or test light for power while cranking and when in the run position only

Not sure which is why I recommended testing the circuit.
