Greetings Pontiac Owners Forum,
I'm new to the forum space, but happy to be here on behalf of my father-in-law whom owns a 1977 Pontiac Can Am. He's working on restoring this beauty, and has some questions. But first, allow me to introduce him and his car:
He's worked in the automotive industry for over forty years, and is the original owner of this muscle car. Many moons ago, for his honeymoon, he drove it from Michigan to California and back with my mother-in-law (greatest in-laws a man can ask for btw). This bad boy is white on white, and he personally sandblasted a sweet Vegas themed etching on all the glass. About thirty years ago the engine 'blew up', twice. He had the block rebuilt, and installed 403 heads and intake; the original is a 400. Fast forward to today, he still has the original 400 heads/intake, and wants to restore it to make the notorious Route 66 drive with family and friends.
On a personal note, over the past 10-years he has gone through Hell and back, and forced to retire early after enduring stage 4 oral, lung and bone cancer; not to mention the emotional and financial woes associated. He's the strongest man I know. This past Father's Day, he reminisced about the joy of the drive on his honeymoon years ago, and how he wants to enjoy life today with family and friends caravanning across the country on the historic Route 66.
The question he has is regarding the 403 vs. the 400 heads, and if the pushrods are the same length for both? Everyone he's spoken to becomes baffled when he tells them it's a Pontiac, and he has exhausted his resources. Which is where you come in. Is there anyone out there who knows the answer to this question? Trying to save a penny here to make this work, but don't want to install the 403 pushrods in the 400 if they're too long. Any help you can provide in getting this vehicle to purr again so that he can get his kicks is greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
CanAmature
