I am from the Netherlands and just bought (not in my possession yet) a pontiac firebird esprit 77. It has a chevy 454 big block engine (probably late 70’s). I have no technical background but wonder if the gearbox (I think TH350) and other features are solid enough considering the extra horsepower?

any tips are welcome and appreciated.

A late 70's stock 454 did not put out alot of power so the TH350 should be fine.
I take it you dont know the engine code?

I don’t have the engine code yet. The previous owner says it puts out 340 HP.

You didnt ask for picture of the block stamping in front of the passenger side cylinder head?

Any trans can be built nowdays to handle any engine, but all GM divisions always put Turbo 400's behind big blocks because of torque and warranty. Turbo 350 's were put behind 350 cubic inch engines or smaller .

Finally got my car. Not found the block stamping yet though. How can I share pictures here?

In front of the passenger side cylinder head there is a pad with numbers and letters, it may have been painted over.
