I’m trying to get some information on a TransAm. A friend of mine has a 1977 TransAm with a 455 HO 4 speed. Did they make any 455 equipped TAs after 1976? I’m curious to know, because if this is true, it will be a very rare and valuable car. Can anyone let me know if I get the VIN number?

Never built from factory new.

Only option would be , it was COPO or built for someone high up in the GM food chain.

Vin and body tag will tell the truth.

No such combination from the factory in 77, the VIN will tell you the original engine and the code on the block will tell you what is in the car now.

455 HO was 71 and 72 only

Actually they referred to the Standard D-Port 455's as a 455 HO in 1975 & 1976, also the optional 455 in the 1970 was also referred to as a 455 HO it was also a standard D-port engine. So it does get a little confusing.
But I agree no 455's were installed in standard factory built cars after the 76 model year. There have been 2 documented 1977 Lemans Freeway enforcers built with 455's, but those are the only cars I am aware of that were sold with the larger engine. And they are a long way from a T/A.

Chances are the engine was replaced, but as previously stated the the VIN will tell what engine was originally installed, and if it has the original block there will be a Partial VIN stamped on it.

The Ram Air IV 400, 455 HO and the SD 455 were all round port, that is the major distinguishing feature of these amazing engines. Regular 455s were all D port. The Ram Air IV 400 was the top engine in 1970, the 455 HO was 71 and 72 only, the SD was 73 and some 74 only. All others are D port engines, 350s, 400s and 455s.
Photos of 71 455 HO head, 455 HO exhaust manifolds and Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold.
Hope that helps.

While I do not disagree with you about the Round Port Heads on the engines you mentioned, I was only trying to point out the Pontiac Referred to the D-Port 455's in both the 1970 GTO's & the 1975-76 T/A's as 455 HO's. Not to be confused with the 1971-72 round port 455 HO engines. In fact both the 1970 & 1975-76 "HO" engines were the same 4bbl 455's you could order in the full size cars of the same model year.

Either way no HO 455 of any kind was available in any T/A from the factory in the 1977 model year.

Thank you Sir and good clarification!
Just sticking a "HO" decal on the hood scoop does not a "real" 455 HO make.

the 455 in a 77 is not original. Check out our web page which has loads of information.

Kosoneal,

If this car happens to be on the east coast, or happens to have an M-22 and/or a 12 bolt posi w/3.42 gears in it, I may have info on the car.
