I recently bought a 1980 Pontiac Firebird Esprit. The car had a harsh knocking on the engine. I came to find out that it was the lifters along with the rockers. Now, I was wondering if it’s possible to put a Chevy 305 engine on the Firebird. Can I mount the transmission with the engine? is it the same bolt pattern? How much trouble am I looking into if I swap the engine? Or should I just buy the camshaft, rockers and go about. Thanks.

Those engines are more than a quarter of a century old, however still popular and well known by engine specialists, why not asking your nearest machine shop ? They for sure will know if both engines share the same bolt pattern. However, if you ask my opinion, I would defenitevely rebuild the original engine, I would face no problems derived from the adaptation of a different power source.
Good luck

no the pontiac and chevy bell is not tne same. you will need a trans from a chevy to make it work. or a convertion kit from jegs

The Chevy won't bolt to the BOP trans. You will need a Chevy trans. 350turbo would be the best beat to make it a easy swap. Should be able to use the same trans cross member and drive shaft. You'll have to change the motor mounts buy new ones the cross member all ready has holes for the Chevy mounts. You'll need all the brackets for the Chevy engine best place to get them is a junk yard. If your going to all the trouble of changing to Chevy go with a 350. Unless you all ready have a 305. Good Luck.
