I'm hoping some of you can help me. I'm new here. I own a 1980 Firebird Formula and I'm putting a 75 Pontiac 400 in place of a 71 350 that a previous owner put in. I'm just concerned about a couple things. With a 850 carb on top, would I be able to use the original hood or would I need to change it out for clearance? Will the transmission bolt up? I'm rebuilding the 400 so any advise about that would be appreciated. Thank you

The basic block and head design is the same for 71 and 75. What 850 carburetor? If you are referring to a Holley double pumper 850 CFM that would be way to large for a 400 CID engine. As far as overall carburetor height a Quadrajet and a Holley should be just about the same.

Thank you. My friend had an old 850 that would need rebuilt but that's what he thought I should use. What carb would you suggest?

what carburetor do you have now a 2bbl? If your going for a new carburetor and 4bbl intake I would look at an Edelbrock Performer and a Holley, Demon, or Quick Fuel carburetor with vacuum secondaries, electric choke and a size of between 600 CFM and 750 CFM depending on what other modifications you are doing, headers, camshaft, rear end gears, etc.

Yeah there's a 2bbl on the 350 now. Could I keep the intake and get a new carb that's bolts on? I'm gonna port the hell out of the intake that I have now. I'm changing our the rear end gears and changing the open diff out. Probably new cam. New pistons since I'm boring the chambers.

You cannt put a 4bbl carb on a 2bbl intake, it's pointless and would totally restrict the carburetor flow.

No I know that. I'm talking about the 400. It came with a 4bbl intake. I'm not worrying about the 350
