1984 2.5 4 sp manual trans. noise

The car seems to run okay but after it is shifted into 2nd gear muffled pops and other noises sometimes happen as car is accelerated thru to 3rd then sort of stops..... it is weird because other than the noise it seems to run okay. Anyone have a possible reason for this? Thanks for your time, I'm not a mechanic but I do follow instructions better than most.

why are you saying transmission noise, your description sounds like an exhaust noise, you are sure it is trani? Have you checked fluid level? When is the last time the trani gear oil was changed?

I'm sorry, I didn't mean a transmission noise, i just meant manual trans. thank you for answering. Is there anything I can check? I only drove it for a short time and don't have any other info on what it did for the last thirty years. It looks like it was treated with a lot of love and care. At least you have given me a place to start, I will check the fluids. any other advice will be most welcome. I do know that it past smog a month ago.

OK, so it sounds like you just got this car. If you dont know the maintenance history you have to check the condition of the normal replacements parts that are part of a tuneup, plugs, filters, etc. Is the exhaust system in good condition, no holes?

Okay, It might just be the really wide tires and the fact that I had an automatic trans. that had not been modified like this one is. It's just louder and seems a lot stronger than what I was expecting. It is really beautiful but, the reason I bought it was it is so clean and new looking. And it really doesn't matter because I do know what owning one is about and have had lots of learning opportunities fixing what breaks. I'm looking for trouble andI don't think I'm going to find...... nope I'm not going to even say it. Thanks for talking to me.
