1985 Fiero GT

A guy I know (whom I trust) just acquired a 1985 Pontiac Fiero GT. Some lady wanted it gone and gave it to him for $200. It's a stick - not an auto.

He doesn't have a key to it but she claims she just put a new motor in, runs fine, etc.

Guy will sell it to me for $1,000.

Is it worth that? Anything I should know about them? What are these even worth?

Will do some searching when I get home from work.


 
make sure you have legal title before buying it. The value can be 2k to 4k depending on which site you go to.
 
So for $1,000 I'm pretty much stealing the thing?

I haven't seen the motor yet and I'm not sure if it runs but I'd imagine some minor tuneups would do the trick.

Say I bought it for 1k and wanted to get out of it. Think I'd have a problem getting my 1k back?
 
without knowing what it needs no way of saying, you need more information about the car and I find it strange that there are no keys! Might pay to do a VIN check on the car.

Here's some more information.

The guy owns a junkyard. Some women called him and said she wanted the Fiero out of her garage.

I guess she gave it to her son for college, he went to college, never did anything with the car and it just sat, she wanted it gone to clear up space in her garage, so he got it for cheap. ($200.)

She doesn't have the title or keys to the car (suspicious, i know) but the guy is going to get a new title for the car.

I figure if he can get a title for the car the thing isn't stolen. Is there anyway to look at the motor on this thing without having the keys to the car?
 
Guess with a title and the VIN you can have a key cut by a dealer or auto locksmith. Still would pay a few bucks to get the VIN history.

Unplug the two plugs from the ignition switch, located on the lower part of the steering column, plug them into a spare ignition switch and you will be able to start the engine. This guy owns a junk yard right? Most all 80s GM ignition switches will be compatible. Yes you will have to figure out how the lever of the key tumbler slides the ignition switch.

Note - I am saying swap the electrical switch, not the key/tumbler. And again the switch is located on the lower column, bolted to it.

Swap out the steering column for one with a key and you can drive it. The column is held on by 4 bolts and then one more for the steering linkage itself. You do have to remove a piece of trim molding held on by 4 screws to get to the four bolts.

I don't remember seeing many GT Notch Backs, I believe that body style was 85 Only. Looks like 1 of 22,534 Notch Back GT Built in 85.
