I have had a issue with the car not wanting to run at a RPM over a set amount. The amount changes each time. It will run like a champ sometimes but other times it is like a switch that turns the engine off once it hits the rpm. It will always restart but i have to drive about 30 MPH the whole way. I think it is the ECM because i could smell something electronic getting hot the first time it happened. Also the center console right where you would rest your right arm while in the driver seat gets hot. I can feel heat coming from around the cigarette lighter. I took the console out and there is nothing there. The cigarette lighter and wires do not seem to be hot or damaged. The ecu seems to be hot to the touch but how could the heat be all the way forward? Is there anything under that area that could be getting hot? Im thinking the ECU heat is somehow running up the arm rest only on the driver side. I do not want to put $100 in on a new ecu and not fix the problem.

Are the ECM's known for going bad?

Thanks

the fuel pump is under your elbow. had a bonneville that did the same thing, ended up being that. figured it out after i changed the ecm, catylitic converter, fuel filter... Check your fuel pressure

That is very good info. I wouldnt think the heat from the pump would soak through into the cab. Im sure i will see the explanation as soon as i get under the car.

Thanks

I just remembered the electronic smell. could i smell the pump on the inside of the car?

I wouldn't think so. The wiring is inside and may have scorched? I haven't had my 2M4 long enough to need to see exactly how the pump is arranged.

I decided to change the ignition module. It seems to have fixed it. The computer isn't get hot anymore either. Weird that the module would make the computer get hot. I need to make a few more trips to confirm that it is fixed.
