I am looking into purchasing a 86 Firebird with a v-6. Has prior salvage title from a fire that got started from prior owners with a v-8 but was ALL redone.

Sorry for my poor info as I am not a car person. To the right of the engine there is a small cylinder type thing I take it has to do with emission or exhaust that goes to a metal hose but before that its connected by a small rubber hose. It keeps burning the rubber hose off and the owner said he has had to add coolant a few times too but the guage stays within reason.

Can anyone help me with finding out what this it. With it burned off it allows some very rich exhaust smells into the cab.

Any help would be great!!! Is it work $1400 and how hard is this to fix?

I agree 1000% with Ken K This sounds like a giant mistake. The coolant leak could be very expensive to repair if it is in the engine. The exhaust coming into the car is very dangerous as it could kill you.

If they had a v-8 in it why didn't they replace it with another v-8? I have found that replacing engines with a different size engine usually ends up with a lot of stuff that doesn't match up and costs more to get it right than it is worth.

You could end up spending a lot of money (hundreds to thousands)trying to get this thing on the road.

As Ken K wrote "RUN DON'T WALK AWAY" form this thing.
