the shift linkage is internal to the transmission.
does it shift into the other gears with the engine off?
have you checked the transmission fluid level?
how many miles on the car?
did you have any warning signs, noise, difficult to shift, etc.?

It doesn't shift into when the engine is off. Transmission fluid level full and clean. 145000 miles
It is driven very often. No warning signs, noise or difficult shifting. It had been sitting for about 6 weeks.

The select cable is bad more than likely. It controls side to side as where the shift cable is back and fourth. I have owned 3 over the years.
