I bought a 89 GTA 5.0 from a lady a few months ago. It had been sitting in her yard for 4-5 years after her husband had running problems with it. Unfortunately, he got sick and passed on. Since the mechanical condition was a big unknown, she was going to send it to the salvage yard. I convinced her to let me buy it and see if I can get it running again.

So far, I put in a new battery and changed the plugs. (what a pain!) The plugs were rusty and the gap over .060. Fresh oil and coolant and turned the engine over without a problem. It almost wanted to start but would not. I checked the fuel pressure and when the key goes on, its 45 psi BUT it drops to zero right away. Is there some sort of pressure regulator that may be bad or should I just change the pump? How hard is it to drop the tank? Is there one brand of pump better than the others? (FYI - there is no trunk key so I hope I don't need to get in there to do anything until I have a key made!).

I usually only collect cars before 1972 with carburetors but this seems to be a nice car to use as a summer driver.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

start by looking at the vacuum line on the regulator. If you see gas when you pull the line off the regulator, it needs to be replaced.

Curious what the result was. I am in the same boat. I know its an old thread but hopefully you are still around or someone remembers your findings.
