1995 GrandAM turn signal switch replacement

I need to replace the multifunction/turn signal switch on my 1995 Grand Am. I have a few questions.

There seems to be some confusion as to wether the steering wheel needs to be removed to replace the switch. Can anyone confirm?

Also, if the wheel needs to come off, what is the proper way to remove the Air bag without it going off in my face.
