I own a 95 Pontiac Grand Am SE V6. Today my boyfriend was driving it and the cruise control would not turn off while he was trying to slow down. He had to slam on the brakes, pull off to the shoulder, put it in park and shut it off to make it stop. It was still revving very high while in park. He tried to turn it back on, and at first it did start up but was revving as bad as before. Once again he turned it off and now it wont start at all, it just clicks. We tried jumping it thinking it may have killed the battery. Now we think it ate up the starter, though it was not grinding like it was ruining the starter. Battery terminals are not corroded. The car did not red-line while it was revving either time. Please if you have any ideas or suggestions please voice them. I want to be sure its the starter before I go out and buy one. Thank you for taking your time to do this!

I dont think it is the starter.

i would check to make sure it charging the battery properly. The electronics of the car will drain a battery while driving and a low voltage scenario can cause all sorts of weird anomalies.. had this happen in a avenger and the radio and in car stuff started to go wonky then the engine went funny and died restarted went a little way then died again.

or maybe the throttle position sensor has gone bad (which the cruise control relies on)

to see if your alternator is charging.. with the engine running you should get somewhere around 13.5-14 volts at the battery.
