I have a 96 Grand Am car will srart run for about 5 seconds and shut down,if you leave the key in the on position you can crank all day and it will not restart, but if you turn the key to the off position and turn it back on it will start again and do the same thing.... can any-one give me some thing to look for........

Thanks
Del.

Sounds like a fuel issue. Check the filter(s) first. Chances are good it's merely a clogged filter, and they're cheap to replace. As for its location, if it's like my '92 GP, it should be near the gas tank inline with the fuel line, on the driver's side. If it's not like the GP, you're on your own. Since the car runs, even for 5 seconds, it doesn't indicate an issue with the ignition. If it's not the filter, check the fuel lines/pump/etc. I once had an old Falcon that would run for about 100 feet and die, I'd wait 5 minutes, start it up and repeat the process. A $5 fuel filter fixed the problem (this was back in my teens when I knew nothing about cars but how to change the oil and put gas in it...:D ).

I am a very vocal advocate of obtaining manuals if a person is to work on their own car. If you don't already have one, they're easily found at your local auto parts store - look for Haynes or Chilton. Sometimes you can even find the dealer service manuals on eBay - I have a set for the GP, and they're extremely detailed.
