I know that the car needs to be warm and running to check the transmission fluid, but if you check it when it is cold and not running and there is nothing on the dipstick, is that bad? Should there be at least something on it even if it is cold and not running? The reason is this, a friend heard a loud noise from her car as she left the driveway of my house, then the car was kinda loud and as she drove home, first the speedometer stopped working, she was still going about the speed limit (50) then the car seemed as if it were struggling really bad to keep going the speed limit, she drove about 5 miles and then she had to stop at a light, but when she tried to take off, the car wouldn't go. It was running fine, just wouldn't go.

chances are better than not she was so low on fluid that she junked the transmission. Yes there should be some on the stick even cold.

trans is out of fluid.. fill it up with dextron and hope it still goes. It most likely will though... probably did 25,000 miles worth of wear and tear on it.

Then find the leak.. I have a 1995 that had a loose and a missing transmission pan bolts when I got it.
