...Problems? so I went in for a coolant flush after my car was smelling like it was burning, thinking maybe the coolant was dirty. The service guy told me the coolant looked fine and probably wasn't the problem. So he tried putting in a new thermostat in and immediately the car registered as it was overheating. So after pondering for about 2 hours he calls me into the shop telling me either

1. theres a clog in the cooling system somewhere because the coolant isnt getting to the engine or 2. the water pump is bad.

He told me he didnt think it was the water pump because it wasnt cracked or leaking or making any "whining noises."

The car DOES WHINE when i first start it up in the morning to warm up, since its winter here in wisconsin, we let the cars warm up in the morning. I thought maybe it was just a belt.

So heres my delima do I go after replacing the water pump or have a mechanic rip apart my engine looking for this clog? I dont have a lot of money to spend
another thing I failed to mention is the mechanic DID try and do a coolant flush, he said the machine would start, extract about a half gallon of coolant and stop.

make sure your fan is working just cuz its winter dose not mean you dont need it to cool down the motor

its possible to get a bad tstat, and its opening up. but check the belt, and i would replace the waterpump. at least then you know you have the externals covered. make sure the cooling fan is kicking in if its electric. and if its not check the fan clutch. it should have a drag, and stop soon if you spin it by hand.
