1996 pontiac sunfire shifter moves but will not engage reverse or any gears.?

Shift linkage seems to move, but cant get it to engage any gears. The day it happened just put a new battery in would that have done something? Need help so i can at least get it to drive to the tranny shop. can someone help?
 
You may have accidently pulled the cable off at the transmission, or possibly did your old battery Leak and corrode the cable in half ?
it is located near the battery position if I remember correctly so that is where I would check first..
