Replaced the fuel pump in my 1997 and when I try to start the engine it fires for a few revs and quits. Also, gas is leaking from one of the fuel lines in the engine compartment. Is there a port that fuel could come out of if the engine floods? Maybe a pressure relief port?
BTW, the car has been sitting a while but it always started approx every 6 months.

The car has a pressure regulator that can fail and have gas leak from it. Why did you replace the fuel pump? Did you replace the fuel filter also? Did you do a fuel pressure test?

Bench tested the pump and it was locked up. Even tried to free it up with carb cleaner. Replaced the fuel filter. Everything sounds good now from the tank, like the 3 second run to prime the injectors. I've obviously got good pressure to the fuel plenum now, just need to investigate what other components may be bad and causing the leak. Again, the car has been sitting for years and I start it occasionally. I'll check the regulator before I pull the injectors. The car has never had a wrench on the motor till now.

How old is the gas sitting in the tank? Over a year and it could be bad or full of water from condensation.

Replaced the fuel when I dropped the tank. Haven't seen a pressure regulator up close for a 2.2L does it contain a diaphragm that can go bad just from sitting? Seems it must have a port somewhere if fuel can leak from it, kinda like what a mechanical fuel pump has? It tried to start when I first hit the key after replacing the fuel pump, then I smelled the gas leak and it wouldn't fire anymore. Is removing the throttle body required to inspect the regulator? I suppose at this point the injectors could be varnished as well.
The car only has 60K miles on it. Need to get it running good so I can sell it.

No leaks from the regulator. Pulled the vacuum line and the regulator held vacuum with a hand held pump. The fuel was actually dripping down the supply line from the tank (the 3/8" line to passenger side of plenum) not the return line (the 5/16" line drivers side of plenum with regulator). You would think the regulator would be on the supply side not the return side. Pulled and cleaned the injectors and, just for grins, started it up with the injectors removed. It ran for a few seconds, longer than before, so at least all the electronics seem to be in working order.
Tomorrow I'll pull a vacuum on the regulator and see if it passes fuel. It may be plugged. Don't know if pulling vacuum engages it or shuts it off. Will try both ways.

HOUSTON . . . WE NO LONGER HAVE A PROBLEM ! ! !
The fuel leak turned out to be a deteriorated, 69 cent, O-ring on the fuel supply line where it enters the injector plenum (no fuel rail on this 2.2L). Also replaced the injector O-rings (2 ea) while I had them out for cleaning. So I guess we're off and running. Hope to find a buyer for this 60K one-owner bird before anything else deteriorates from just sitting.
