1997 pontiac grand am ? Cadillac converter?

if i take out the Cadillac converter and block it off or cut it off will the can still run right ...b/c all it does is filter the air that goes in to the air ....so a can really does not need it right ? i live in florida so we dont have inspections but if i was to move back up north i cant get it on the road ....and the part cost $100 so i really dont want to spend it if the car can run with out it ..........and the check engine light should go of ? i took it to advanced auto and the hooked it up to the doc ...and its got 2 problems and runs like a beauty ....
i dont mean pluging it i mean redricting it to the exhust b/c i dont what the noises that it makes ....and i could care less what the state laws are ..they are not going to put my can up on a ramp and look at and this talk about making the air bad whats the diference with tracker trailers when the black smokes comes uot so do lectuer me about that shit i just want to know about me car and dont answer me if you dont not shit about cars

have it replaced,there is a o2 sensor after it ? car can have running problems if removed . it is against the law to take it off. the light will stay on if you take it off

First person was right its called a catalytic converter. If remove it and move back up north you won't pass inspection.
